Common types of mold in homes.

9/28/2017 (Permalink)

Humboldt County has the best climate for mold to thrive on. It is damp and humid, exactly the environment where mold grows best.

The most common types of mold are; aspergillum, cladosporium and stachybotrys atra (also known as black mold).

Aspergillus is a fairly allergenic mold that is commonly found on foods and in home air conditioning systems.

Cladosporium is most often found in the back of toilets, painted surfaces and fiberglass air ducts. It is sometimes green or black and looks similar to pepper grains. It can trigger allergies symptoms such as red and watery eyes, rashes and a sore throat. This mold is non-toxic to humans although it can causes some distressing symptoms.

At SERVPRO OF EUREKA, we can remediate mold quickly and efficiently . We are certified and knowledgeable in the area of Mold Removal.

Why Commercial Buildings Need Duct Cleaning

8/5/2017 (Permalink)

With all of the regular maintenance of a Commercial Building, do you also need to clean your ducts regularly?

If your building is a motel, hotel, casino or school,it is recommended to have them cleaned once a year to stay on top of any build up or issues in the ducts.

Poor indoor air quality, a weak air filtration system  and duct leaks can all result in dust entering the duct system. This dust can accumulate to the point that it starts to break off and re-enter your air. When this happens, you may notice your workspaces become dusty faster.

Occasionally because of high humidity or a water leak, mold may start to grow in the ducts. Mold in the ducts releases tiny spores that will end up circulating through your whole building. In addition to aggravating allergies and asthma, exposure to mold spores increases risk of upper respiratory infection.

Pest infestations are another reason your ducts should be checked and cleaned. It's not uncommon for mice, squirrels, bees, and other pests to find their way into a duct system. Once inside, they leave behind nesting material, hair, and dead insects. Particles of these are then blown out into your rooms.

To protect your business, employees and customers, it is wise to have your ducts cleaned and maintained annually.  This is just one more of the services provided by SERVPRO OF EUREKA. Give us a call today! 707-445-0900

When Your Commercial Building Has Been Damaged By Fire, Call SERVPRO OF EUREKA!

8/5/2017 (Permalink)

Commercial fires can have devastating consequences for business owners. Not only is your building damaged, but any equipment or inventory inside the building can be damaged as well.

Not all fires can be prevented. But there are cautionary steps that you can take to prevent many of them. Electrical fires are a common type of fire that can happen in commercial buildings and they cause very costly property damage. The good news is that they are also quite often avoidable.

Never overload a power strip or electrical outlet. They can only handle a certain amount of electricity. If they become overloaded, a fire is more likely to start.
In addition to avoiding power overloads, it's important that you maintain order in the workplace setting.  You can reduce the risk of fire by keeping chemicals and other flammable materials away from power strips, electrical outlets, and other areas of the property that experience high levels of heat and electrical arcing.

Know that clutter is a huge fire hazard, store boxes containing documents in file cabinets and maintain neat storerooms.
Always keep your fire sprinkler system well maintained and replace batteries and check your smoke and fire alarms each quarter of the year. Check your fire extinguishers and make sure all employees know where to locate them and how to use them.

Preventing water damage in a commercial building

8/5/2017 (Permalink)

According to disaster safety.org, here are some items to keep in mind to prevent water damage in a commercial building. When looking at your property, keep in mind that it isn't always the obvious that causes water damage.

 Ground Maintenance:

Grounds maintenance and landscaping are major components of the interconnected systems that work together to protect a commercial building from water damage. In sometimes unexpected ways these outdoor activities and elements can have sudden and extreme impact on the building itself.

The Building Envelope

All buildings are different, but each is at risk for water damage. From a minor roof leak to violently destructive hurricanes, any unwanted water intrusion can significantly impact the value of a commercial property. Protecting the roofs, walls, windows, and other components of ‘the envelope’ are essential to reduce the likelihood of water damage.

HVAC Systems

Proper operation and maintenance of the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system is essential to reduce the risk of water damage to a commercial building.

SERVPRO OF EUREKA is IICRC trained and certified to clean up after all types of water damage. The quicker we get in to clean up, the less damage there will be and you can get back to operating your business!

Familiar items, such as treats, toys and bedding can help reduce stress for your pet.

Tsunamis Safety

8/3/2017 (Permalink)

Living in Humboldt County makes us very familiar with earthquakes, but I think many of us forget the risk of Tsunamis.

Tsunamis are large ocean waves generated by major earthquakes beneath the ocean floor or major landslides into the ocean. Rising to several feet or higher, they can strike the coast with devastating force. Residents in Humboldt County that live near Oceans, Bays, Estuaries and Rivers, need to be aware that a tsunami could arrive within minutes of a severe earthquake – and the danger period can continue for many hours. Tsunamis can occur any time of year, day or night.

Here are a few tips from the Red Cross:

  • To escape a tsunami, go as high and as far as you can – ideally to a spot 100 feet above sea level or 2 miles away.
  • Every foot inland or upward may make a difference!
  • If you can see the wave, you are too close for safety.

               Know the difference!

  • A Tsunami WARNING means a tsunami may have been generated and could be close to your area.
  • A Tsunami WATCH means a tsunami has not yet been verified but could exist and may be as little as an hour away.

Above all, have an evacuation plan ready in advance. Find a safe space on higher ground and communicate with family members! If SERVPRO OF EUREKA can help you prepare, give us a call! 707-445-0900.

Why SERVPRO of Eureka is the best choice for mold removal

7/31/2017 (Permalink)

Have you ever had mold or mildew in your home and you wipe it down yourself with bleach, but within some time, it just comes back? Do you repeat the process over and over to keep the mold at bay??

Did you know that when you wipe the mold and do not kill the mold, you are actually spreading the mold spores? That for every bit of mold you see, there are millions of spores that you don't see. Mold on surfaces and mold in the air..

Not a great thought, right? Without removing the moisture source (mold needs moisture to grow) and using the proper chemicals, the mold will continue to return and grow.

At SERVPRO OF EUREKA, our Technicians have been trained and certified to clean up the moisture and erase the mold. Our Production Manager is constantly furthering his knowledge of mold removal and we think he is the best in the business!

Give us a call if you have mold. Let us do the work once, so you don't have to repeatedly!!             SERVPRO OF EUREKA ~  707-445-0900

Different Categories of Water in a Loss

7/28/2017 (Permalink)

When you have a water loss, SERVPRO OF EUREKA categorizes the water into 3 different categories. These categories are well know between insurance, restoration and emergency agencies. Once we categorize the water, we are then able to treat the water loss accordingly.

Category 1 Water - Refers to a source of water that does not pose substantial threat to humans and classified as "clean water". Examples are broken water supply lines, tub or sink overflows or appliance malfunctions that involves water supply lines.

Category 2 Water - Refers to a source of water that contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants  and causes discomfort or sickness when consumed or even exposed to. Known as "gray water". This type carries micro organisms and nutrients of micro organisms. Examples are toilet bowls with urine (no feces), sump pump failures and water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.

Category 3 Water - Known as "black water" and is grossly unsanitary. This water contains unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria and fungi, causing severe discomfort or sickness. Type 3 category are contaminated water sources that affects the indoor environment. This category includes water sources from sewage, rising water from rivers or streams, ground surface water or standing water. Category 2 Water or Grey Water that is not promptly removed from the structure and or have remained stagnant may be re classified as Category 3 Water.

10 Key Fire Safety Tips

7/28/2017 (Permalink)

Though some fires are unavoidable acts of nature or unpredictable accidents, many fires in the home and workplace are avoidable. The following tips, curtesy of the NFPA, can help reduce the likelihood of a fire in your business or home.

1) Watch your cooking. Stay in the kitchen if you are frying, grilling or broiling food. Never allow young children around the stove or oven.

2) Give space heaters space. Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn.

3) Smoke outside. If you must smoke inside, use a sturdy, deep ashtray.

4) Keep matches and lighters out of reach. Keep matches and lighters in high cabinets , preferably under a child lock.

5) Inspect electrical cords. Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs or have loose connections.

6) Be careful using candles. Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn. Blow them out before you leave the room or go to sleep.

7) Have a fire escape plan. Make a fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year.

8) Install smoke alarms. Install alarms on every level of your office or home and inside bedrooms, interconnect them so they all sound at once.

9) Test smoke alarms. Test alarms once per month. Replace batteries once per year or as needed.

10) Install sprinklers. Sprinklers can help maintain and sometimes even extinguish fires, giving your local fire department a better chance of saving your property.

Why you need the professionals to clean up after a fire

7/27/2017 (Permalink)

Why you need professionals to clean up fire damage according to the IICRC website.

When the firefighters leave, it may seem like the danger has passed and the home is safe from further destruction, but without professionals to help clean the smoke damage, the building will never return to normal. While the principles behind fire restoration are fairly simple, it requires a lot of experience and manpower to perform adequately, and this means that it shouldn’t be attempted by a homeowner on his or her own.

While fire is always the immediate danger, once it is gone, what it leaves behind will continue to affect the house
. Ash and smoke, if left unhindered, will cause extensive corrosion, etching and discoloration, not to mention lingering powerful odors. Professionals that clean fire and smoke damage can stop this before it becomes a major problem, assuming they are contacted soon enough. There are many companies out there that advertise their ability to restore areas affected by fire, but only those with proper training and certification should be considered. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is the main oversight agency in this industry. The IICRC requires its registrants to take extensive coursework before earning their certification. This is a symbol of excellence, and those that uphold the standards that have been set can be contacted through the IICRC.

These professionals can clean smoke damage and restore items affected by a fire, but they must be brought to the site as soon as possible to halt the ongoing issues that ash residue can cause. The first thing that ash does to the home is discolor most surfaces. Anything that is made of plastic or was close to the fire will start discoloring within minutes, and within several hours, fiberglass and finishes on appliances will begin to yellow. Metals may also tarnish. After a few days pass, the ash will cause walls to discolor permanently, along with clothing and upholstery. Wood and vinyl will need to be refinished or replaced, and metal will start corroding.

If a professional isn’t hired to clean smoke and fire damage, the costs for restoration will skyrocket after a few weeks
. Metals may need to be replaced, carpet will permanently discolor and glass may be severely etched, which will necessitate replacement. It will also become apparent that the odors caused by the disaster may still be present and intense enough to be distracting. Because ash is acidic, the longer it takes to hire experts, the more destruction it will cause.

The first thing a trained, certified, professional company will do when on site is to identify all affected materials and the source of any odors. The only way to properly clean smoke and fire damage is to be extremely thorough. Ash residue is easily disturbed and can spread through the building with ease, causing nearly everything to need restoration. The experts will identify what can and cannot be salvaged, and will remove any built-up ash residue that is coating surfaces. Over time, ash builds up in layers, and may eventually form into a lacquer-like consistency. Once this is done, the restorers will locate the source of the odor, and treat it with specialized detergents that are formulated for neutralizing this kind of odor. Once materials are treated, they may be sealed off to prevent any further odor from permeating the air in the future.

This entire process is very detailed, and hiring a professional that can be trusted to do the job right is imperative

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

Smoke and Soot Clean-Up

10/27/2016 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Smoke and Soot Clean-Up Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Humboldt Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Eureka will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Does Your Humboldt Home Have a Mold Problem?

10/27/2016 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Does Your Humboldt Home Have a Mold Problem? In Humboldt County, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
